| | tired | ] | I haven't used livejournal in a while, but this seems like the proper thing to use livejournal for. I guess I should promote my career here too, but fuck it, or as the Serbs would say, jebenja.
First off, I met a nice girl in London, on my last night there. Her name was Mary, and she was a Brit from Dublin. She's the brunette. Her two friends spoke the worst English I've ever heard. Couldn't understand a word out of their mouths.

We certainly had a nice time together.

However, magically, we had the same type of disposable cameras that night... and I ended up with hers, and she with mine, and so I haven't any of pics of London, not of the touristy things I did, or of my hosts Jas and Christian, or of the friends I made.
But jebenja, dusa! I was off to Serbia the next day, which was one of the best experiences of my life. It would be too much of a pain in the ass to post ALL the pictures here, so I'll just do highlights, but they're all up here. Check 'em out, or odiejba, duso (probably mispelled).
First off, here's the Season Quartet. My favorite girls. They're performing at Zrenanin here... this is getting ahead of myself, because Zrenanin was the last concert for me in Serbia, and not part of the workshop formally. I had an extra day in Serbia so I just followed the quartet around where ever they went.

I also stayed with Ljuba, a friend of mine from the program, and his wife Nada, child Andrej, and flatmate Danijela, all of whom were incredibly gracious. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of Nada or Danijela, even though Nada escorted me at length around Novi Sad and explained the sights to me there - more below.
I noticed she used the term "too much" instead of "so much" or "so many" a lot... "too much good times, too much nice people," etc. Anyways...
CAFE DE SOL! Fucking amazing place. 5 minutes outside of town, past some pig farm, it was built alongside a canal which is a tributary of the Danube. The water is perfectly clear, and hence, the patrons of the cafe have themselves a swim before and after their beers (Lav or Tuborg are the local specialities) or their Rakkia, a type of peach brandy. There was another Jaegermeister-like drink there that I was even more fond of.
We were there every night after rehearsals, which happened in the afternoon, 'til midnight or later. It was mostly outdoors in lawnchairs. Fucking beautiful... I saw three shooting stars the second night I was there. Unfortunately, I didn't take any shots of the canal!

Here's Anna, the violist. What a smart ass. She was 2 months pregnant and always complaining about how she couldn't smoke or drink. Also, how she always had a headache. She told things like they were and didn't cut any corners. Very appropriate to her instrument, I would think. She got busted speeding coming out of Novi Sad on the way to Zrenanin on the final night I was there.

Here's Milan, the Serbian Matt Harrison. For those of you who don't know who Matt Harrison is, he's a gifted songwriter, a bit of a freak, who looks like a big nerd, and is, but can party with the best of 'em. The same is true of Milan - a really nice guy, a brilliant performer, and was out every night, drinking rakkia or going dancing. The only thing I didn't like about Milan was his thong that he wore at the canal. Yeesh, Europeans, put some clothes on!

Here's Alexandra Vrebalov, my matron saint. She's a bit of a local celebrity out there - done well for herself, and her grandmother was a war hero - a physicist who fought with Tito's partisans! There's a bust of her in the park outside the City Hall where the student performance Sunday night was.

Assorted Serbs - friends of some of the Serbs in the program - came up from Belgrade for a few days and sat in on classes. ALL were highly trained musicians from academy. One of them was quite pushy in his musical opinion, actually. All very bright, perhaps a bit distant at first, but good conversationalists none the less.

Ok. Here's Misha, who was a nice gal, but not my closest friend on the trip... still... has a more stunning looking girl ever graced the Earth? I'm not sure... Hitler definitely had it wrong with his master race crap. These Serbs are far closer to a "genetic ideal". I took way too many pictures of Misha; you can see 'em at the photobucket site. I joked with her a lot that we were going to ship her to America, make her a big star, and I'd be her abusive producer, and she'd end her days in despair at some cabaret joint in Vegas. It could happen, folks!
In the foreground of the beautiful girl are the beautiful beers - Tuborg, I think. Lav is also excellent, and a large bottle is the equivalent of $1 USD. Fucking beautiful.

Check out this amazing graffiti, from Sombor. I couldn't make this up:

And here's Mina. Oh, Mina Slina! Dzidzi midgi! (that's Serbian for "cute" or "adorable", sort of) As you might except of a 1st violinst, Mina was the star of the show, very flirtatious, outgoing, a bit of a dilletante, but highly skilled, absolutely gorgeous, charming, and highly solicitous of me, which made me feel good. She was at the Cafe de Sol every night as well - actually, the whole quartet was.

And what, you might ask, was this? That was my question, too. It was plastered to a door in the old City Hall, where we had rehearsals in an incredibly stuffy, hot, room with a chandelier and baby grand piano. Mina explained that it's anti-rightist propaganda. Right down the hallway was pro-rightist propaganda... a "Whither Vojvodina?" poster. For those who don't know, Vojvodina is sort of the "sudatenland" of Serbia, a Serba enclave in northern Kosovo. Most Serbs, even leftists, don't want Kosovo to go...

Whereever I go, I have to pick up the prettiest girl and carry her around. This was at an amazing fish stew + all you can drink wine dinner we were treated to by the Sombor Cultural Center. I made a bit of an ass out of myself with this move, but you only live once.

Mina was not amused.
Oh, Angelina (hard "g" sound). Mina may be the star, but Angelina would be the one I'd marry and take home to mom. Or take myself home to her mom, perhaps. As 2nd violinist, she was also cute, outgoing, but considerably more reserved, more deferential, and had more interest in traveling the world, playing Irish jigs, etc. Also very dzidzi midgi and solicitous of me. I almost put the moves on her, but it just wouldn't have been right. She's too nice a girl. I am going to write a piece for her and Mina though, at their request. I hope she's able to make it out of Serbia and see the world... it's incredibly hard to get a visa out of the country...

And this kind of sums the two of them up, for me. At the Cafe de Sol one night:

Sombor is full of weird sights. They sell shoes and jewelry out of display cases in the middle of the street - much weirder than it sounds. And here's a woman in a box.

Not a real woman.
Here's the coffee spot right below our school where we went before class and during every break. Class was more or less just in the morning; after lunch at the dorm (where there were no shower curtains or laundry) we went to individual lessons. Milan had the stroke of genius of driving the instructors to the Cafe de Sol, which was indeed a great decision - combine learning with beer and swimming.

The folks in this picture are Stasha, Misha, Tea, and Ljuba. I don't know if Ljuba is as handsome as the girls are hot, but the whole country was just completely ridiculous in that regard. Also notice the cool statue of the woman with the coffee cup on her head. We got tons of espresso smleko here...
I ran out of disposable cameras at one point, so sadly, missed the photos of the student concert in Sombor, in front of this HUGE painting of Austro-Hungarians just slaughtering Turks in the new City Hall. Too bad. It was quite a concert... afterwards we had one final jaunt to Cafe de Sol, where we had the run of the place and played a good deal of foozball, and did some dancing. Turns out Prof. Vrebalov is a great dancer as well as a composer... who would've thunk it?
Anyways, the next day I went to stay with Ljuba, at his invitation, in Novi Sad. As I mentioned I haven't pictures of Nada or Danijela. Too bad! Novi Sad is amazingly beautiful. It looks like a total planned-economy dump from the outside, but the downtown is just amazing as hell. They had those painted, ceramic cows that we had all over NYC a few years back. As in Sombor, lots of people drinking espresso or beer or wine outdoors in the middle of the day... cafes up the wazoo...
Ljuba and Nada plied me with food while I was there... Serbian burek, which is cheese-based, and moussaka, which was cheese and potatos more or less. Homemade, and really fucking delicious. Plus more Turkish coffee than I could possibly digest.
Their kid Andrej engaged me energetically in Serbian. I taught him how to high-5 (batsi pet!) and played cars with him. The poor young parents are living in an incredibly cramped 2 bedroom 5 minutes from downtown, but they seemed happy... Danijela wasn't around much because she worked at a casino (as a bartender? hostess? wasn't sure) while she went to med school during the day.
Nada took me to the Danube and the citadel across it... really, totally beautiful. There are many pictures at the photobucket site. I encourage you to check 'em out, because the Danube really is beautiful, and the Citadel, built by knights templar way back in the day, has been converted to an artists' residence now, but there's still leftover artillery from WWI on a hill up there...

I spent the day in Novi Sad and then met up with the quartet, and we drove to Zrenanin. I don't have a very good picture of the cellist Kata. She was a bit dowdy, very shy, and very nice. Anna got busted for speeding out of Novi Sad, but we made the concert. I was just tagging along at this point - the official student concert was done, and most of the students had gone home, either to America or Belgrade. But I had a spare day to kill so I thought I'd check out the South Oxford Six's concert in Zrenanin (the SO6 were the teachers of the workshop, including Alexandra V., and my old friend Mike Rose, who also knows DJ Pu Yi, and who really loosened up on the trip, especially once the rakkia was flowing... just look at that shirt!)

Anyways, Zrenanin was beautiful on the inside, just like Novi Sad. The quartet and composers were stressed out before the concert, because time was short, and they had to cut some pieces. They told me they couldn't do my piece, but Mike went and talked to the quartet, who were having a breakdown - Mina especially - and they insisted on doing my piece! So I got a whole second performance, and it was great. Twice as good as the official student concert. Mina was in tears over accidents that no one could notice at the end of the concert, but even Dan Sonenberg's piece, which got quite bollixed due to some dropped and misordered sheet music, sounded great.
It was hot in there, though! Actually, the whole country was hot! I guess London was pretty damn hot, too.

After the show, we all went (except Alexandra) to this amazing fish restaurant out of town about 20 minutes. I saw more portents in the sky - this time a huge dry thunderstorm. We got to the restaurant, with a windmill outside of it, and rushed it just as it began to pour. There were animal trophies like crazy all over the walls, and unfortunately, I don't have any good pictures of them. We ate plate after plate of fish, and bottle after bottle of wine. A local band consisting of accordion, upright bass, and guitar, came and serenaded us. They played Serbian and a few American tunes. The thunderstorm knocked the electricity out, and for awhile we ate by candlelight.
After the dinner, I drove back with the quartet to Ljuba's place, where I said goodbye to all of them. Maybe I should have proposed marriage to Angelina right there, I'm not sure. In any event, I really hope I see them again. They were just like a little rock band. I woke poor Ljuba up at 1 am, which I feel pretty lousy about. Oddly enough, he was sleeping on the fold-out couch with me instead of with his wife and child in the bedroom...? But I just assumed that maybe this was some Serbian cultural thing I didn't understand. Anyways, it wasn't "like that," you know.
The next day Nada took me to the bus station, and I said goodbye to her and Andrej and took the bus to Belgrade. I must admit I cried like a little girl to leave Serbia. Too much nice people, too much cheap beer, too much high standard of living.
Then I did some totally hardcore commuting - I took the bus to Belgrade - no English, mind you - took a cab from the bus station to the airport - took a flight to Heathrow (15 mins delayed) - took the Heathrow Express to Paddington (not the Underground, a different rail system) - walked to the Underground, took the Bakerloo line to Waterloo train station, and then took a Eurostar to Paris, where I was met by my erstwhile hosts Marie et Neil.

I stayed with them in the dix-huit arrondisment (18th neighborhood, more or less) in their flat. Marie had a surprise for me: she was 6 months pregnant! But she still went out and cruised around with us. The first night there we went to a music venue called La Fleche d'Or, which seems like a good place for the Missing Teens. I met a nice girl there by the name of "Moon" (actually Lune). She asked me where the after-party was, but I still didn't have the address where I was staying or my hosts' phone number, so I was a bit fucked in that regard. Still, I met up with Moon a few days later, after seeing le Musee D'Orsay with my old friend Arian Saleh, and we had coffee together. Here she is, folks!

There are many beautiful pictures of my Parisian visit on the photobucket site, so check them out. Paris really is an impressive city; even more so than London, there's famous shit EVERYWHERE. And it's cheaper and easier to get around. Still not as cheap as New York, though. Never thought I'd say THAT.
The most beautiful thing I saw in Paris was Sacre Coeur. One of the only buildings I've ever seen that literally made me say, "Wow, that is beautiful" out loud over and over again. I took at least 3 pictures of it, and went in and observed prayer - but check it out: God deleted my photos! ALL my other photos of Paris came through, but there are none of Sacre Coeur! He must have known I felt bad about being an atheist during prayer...
But I've got news, God - I can just get a picture off of the internet! So fuck you! That's on the photobucket site, too.
Here's one touristy thing... me outside L'Arc de Triomphe, which is HUGE, and awesome.

I was only in Paris for 2 days, sadly, and it was raining the whole time. In the middle of the week, too. At least I had one good weekend in London, but I really need to go back to both towns and give them a fair shake. Being back here, I haven't really adjusted, perhaps because my home life is odd with my cat and my new roommate situation, etc., etc., but I've been having these naps where I wake up and think, "Uh, am I in Jas' spare bedroom in London? On Ljuba's couch in Novi Sad? Oh wait, I'm in Astoria."
There's so much more I want to say, but I've said most of it to y'all already, and I need to hit the sack. One last closing thought: Serbia looks just like Pennsylvania - rolling valleys, corn everywhere, occasionally a beautiful little forest with twisty roads, and classic American hits of the 80s playing on the radio all the time - Bananarama, post-Beatles George Harrison, etc.
Serbia I will miss the most. |

| | "Sledgehammer" by Harry Belafonte | ] | I've been in overdrive mode of late, getting a lot of work done, cutting bass with Sanford Livingston and guitar with Orange Magic, in particular. More details can be found at our website, in the "NEWS" section. Just click on the milk carton (for some reason, people have a hard time figuring that one out).
Instead of a full update here, I present a brief discourse on Dharshini David, the hottest women on television.
Dharshini David is the hottest woman on television. She's hotter than Condi Rice. Most of you reading this are doubtless Americans, and probably have no idea who the hell Dharshini is. Well, she's the business reporter for the BBC World News. Apparently she used to work for HSBC. She's erudite, well-educated, and looks like she would make the most incredible lover in the western hemisphere.
Strangely, given the nature of the internet, there are no Dharshini David fansites. I was on the verge of making one myself, but I would need some software to capture high-quality images from streamed television, or what-not, and I possess no such technology.
But in my reception-desk induce google meanderings, I did find a website that some of you who can't quite get behind straight-ahead porn may find useful: BBC Babes (there's an internal link to CNN Babes if you want to support our troops by wanking to an American broadcaster).
Needless to say, the pictures of Dharshini don't do her justice. But they're there. That's a start. Dharshini, if you are reading this little spiel, I'm 27 years old, single, love animals, and am looking for a economist to give a lengthy full-body massage to. I can be reached at: jamescall8880@hotmail.com
The rest of you, check out the BBC World News. On Channel 13 at 6 PM and WLIW-21 at 7 PM EST. |

Also, check out the two new Songs of the Week. "Put The Knife In And Twist" is pretty straightforward. It's about women. What else? "Magneto," on the other hand, is a happy song, about Erik Lensherr. It's got that down-home jug-band vibe that only no live instruments whatsoever can provide.
Check them out here. |

The most exciting news on the horizon is that Mike "Jack Fabulous" Weber has made us this new, pretty website. In addition to the new look, we have new mixes up, and a new song of the day section! Please stop by and check out "Tonight I Dream Of The Vet," the song of the day. And of course, the hits you all know and love.
Tonight I finally track bass with Sanford Livingston, thank God. Last night tweaked some keyboards and vocals with The Bosch, or at least, Harrison and Raff thereof. Those new mixes should be up soon, presumably at their website.
I've been playing guitar with Orange Magic of late... his guitars can now be heard on "Drive Uphill" and there's more coming soon. Still waiting to track horns with the Porn Horns and maybe get some more guitar out of Alex and Roko and Hekiro... they're all busy dudes.
Oh, and check it out kiddies... we have a whole fucking VIDEO section now too! Thanks to Orange Magic for these.
Now, just gotta book a show! We have Amy Chace's birthday party on November 11th and then the Missing Teens West plays the Mishap Winter Formal on November 17th, but we're looking for something in October. If any of you hep cats hear of an opening, get in touch with our asses!

Special thanks to Greg Travis for filming and recording the show, and to Andrew Raff and Holt Richardson for taking some purty pictures. One of these is up at our myspace page. The videos should be coming soon to the website.
We're taking a little hiatus from gigging to wrap up work on Music For Young Adults. I'm furthermore gonna be wrapping up some work for The Bosch. Holt and Andrew and I had a pretty productive little session yesterday, and - knock on wood - these songs should be done and "mastered" within the next two weeks.
Also, some live tracks - including our cover of "Takin' Care of Business" by BTO - should be up on the website sometime soon.

I still have no doorknob on my apartment door, and every woman who's attracted to me is extremely emotionally unstable. But that's not holding me back from the huge world of ROCK!
The big news is that we're playing our first Don Hill's show on Friday, Sept. 8, less than 2 weeks from now, and we'll be debuting a lot of stuff there: new tunes such as "Crown Heights," revamps of some old classics such as "This Is The End Of Your World," and the (90% likely) return of the "keyboard guitar" (Roland AX-7) and the wireless headset mic.
Darren Jones of course will be rocking the "skins," which I always thought was a weird name for the drums, although I suppose it does make sense.
Furthermore, Dave Tirolo just passed along the word that the basslines are all cut and ready to be edited and mixed. That's very fantastic news. I'm taking September off, after our show, to mix this down, hopefully add some horns, more guitar, and backing vocals. Then, it's off to the final mixing and mastering stage.
For those of you bored at the office, I highly recommend you pop by our website and listen to the tune "Logic Problems". This is a piece I performed with Mike Weber at the Catch 3-year Anniversary at Galapagos. The performance was a little incoherent, but entertaining, and hopefully a video of it'll be up in a couple of weeks, as should some videos from our Kenny's Castaways gig (thanks, Greg Travis and Renee Cole!).
No shows are booked for October yet, but there'll be at least one, somewhere. After that, we'll be playing Amy Chace's birthday party at the Underscore on Nov. 11, and I'll be flying out to "Cali" to play the Mishap Winter Formal 2006 on Nov. 17. You SFers stay tuned. Dave Posner and crew will be joining me as Missing Teens West for more butt-rock goodness.
Stay warm, and remember: if at first you don't succeed, don't blame me.

Not too many people caught the show, but it was high octane and a lot of fun to play. Nice to have such a big stage and floor to cruise around on. It was also the first time Darren and Spencer played together!
I would like to know what fucking genius decided that myspace was going to be the new forum of networking and promotion for musicians. I have spent one hour this morning clicking the "save event" button over and over again, only to be returned with some non-specific error message and the state changed to "Alabama" from "New York".
BULLSHIT, my friends, BULLSHIT.
In any event, our big gig at Kenny's Castaways is coming up, so if you're in the area, please come out and show your support. We go on at 11 PM and it is going to be a phenomenal set. It's also being filmed and recorded, so we need all the screaming imaginable for our live video!
After this gig, and our Knitting Factory gig on the 8th, it's break time for the Missing Teens. I'm getting burnt out to a certain extent dealing with booking, scheduling rehearsals, etc., and I want to do some more recording and mixing. Dave Tirolo is providing more bass and we've got Roko's guitars on "Fernando and Louise" and "Playing Politics". All these things need to be added. Plus, I've been putting off mixing down some tunes for The Bosch for some time and it's time to finish that up, especially considering how ridiculously hot their new bassist is. I know that shouldn't be a factor in my musical professionalism. So sue me.
We'll likely be playing Amy Chace's birthday party, wherever that is... and hopefully Neill Livingston of the Force Theory will be providing some mixes, and - keeping my fingers crossed here - joining us on stage in coming months...
For now kids, I'm off to office land. Make sure to check out our real website sometime, as well as our Myspace page, which will be filled with more wacky bullshit doubtless soon.

We've got shows 'a plenty coming up: two this weekend - midnight at the Underscore and the next day (6 PM, I think) at the Lucky Cat. Both shows featuring the return of Spencer Chakedis, back from West Palm Beach, and Darren Jones, who is really stepping up his game/being a trooper for doing so many shows and rehearsals.
I'm thinking about debuting a few new tunes at these shows. At the very least, they will feature the return of a few golden oldies, including Tag Along and On and On.
I'm a very busy man with all these shows, so when the Knitting Factory on September 8th wraps up, I'm gonna sit down and finish this album... and then start on a whole new batch of songs, including the long-delayed "Crown Heights" and "Hopscotch". The creative juices are flowing, it's just a matter of getting the time to set in front of ole Bessie and crank these tunes out.
Thankfully smooth Dave Tirolo will be rocking the bass recording this week, so many new mixes should be coming over the next few weeks. Also, Sanford Livingston of Force Theory is gonna try his hand at a few of these tunes.
Stay tuned - it's a very exciting time for the Missing Teens, and, by extension, all of humanity. |

It was Darren's first gig and sounded just great; I got a live recording from our sound job, who was the biggest fucking dickhead I have encountered in years, but managed to get a decent recording anyhow. Roko Djokovic filled in on guitar and gave a great rendition of "Fernando and Louise".
The next few weeks are all about networking and hopefully wrapping up the guitar and bass on Music For Young Adults. We're playing Kenny's Castaways on August 17th, which ought to be another great show; we'll be bringing back some of the older tunes for that, including "On and On"!
The band is most likely going to be joined by Sanford Livingston on laptop and bass, too, which is just fantastic news. I'm prepping the sessions for him to download tonight.
Meanwhile, The Earth From Space is getting the gears moving slowly for a greatly expanded "Peter And The Wolf". If only I could get my ProTools rig working here at the office. Sigh. Well, life can't be perfect.

We play the Ace of Clubs this Friday at 8 PM. It ought to be fabulous. Also, I'm working on a piece for the "Catch" series hosted by the ever-lovin' Andrew Dinwiddie this August 19th. I'll have more news on that soon. The piece is titled "Logic Problems".
Hope you're all continuing to rock!
And check out our show posters. |

| | "Toxic" by Luis Gonzaga | ] | Thanks to all of you who came out to the Sputnik Bar on Saturday. It was a groovy show with tons of nice art and all kinda weirdos out under the moon getting their perv on.
Now we get ready for our big show at Ace of Clubs on Friday, July 21st. We'll have Darren Jones on drums to beef up the sound. Might try to do a new new ones - or ones we haven't done in a while - such as Man Of The Hour, or Christina perhaps.
And thanks again to all you groovy people who came out and supported us. You know who you are, Ted, Greg, Rachel and Alie. And your little friends.
Oh! Also, stop by our myspace page and become our friends. I spent all week working on it, so you might as well. |

| | "Katy Lied" by Tupac Shakur | ] | Man, what a busy week. I think I already mentioned that I played Mishap Prom 2006, which was a total blast. Got back to NYC by the 4th, which I totally blew off in favor of video games and napping. But I got my producitivity on when the half-work-week began on Wednesday.
The Missing Teens are playing this Saturday at the Sputnik Bar but we've also lined up gigs at Ace of Clubs for July 21st and Kenny's Castaways for August 16. These gigs all come courtesy of Mike Weber's fantastic booking page, and my own willingness to suffer through the booking process.
The booking process is a bit like asking every girl you've ever known out on a date, one at a time. It's also a bit like applying to colleges. It's a humiliating experience and the worst part about it is hearing these booking people demand a certain draw and just generally treat you as though you can't be trusted.
Now. I don't exactly know what booking people go through, and I imagine it can be tough. But is it >so< tough to listen to demo after demo? Yes, you're under pressure to bring in revenue to the club. But I'm under pressure here at the Port Authority to get the downstairs file room in order. Must I, and my fellow musicians, be treated like the Penultimate Scum?
There are a few nice booking people out there, and my hat's off to them.
Anyways, between nudging Mike to get the booking page done (done in one day!) and calling up/e-mailing these clubs, it's been an exhausting week. Not to mention that I've been mixing down a few more of the Bosch tunes - Stereo Sound and Quarter-Life Crisis so far. Both great tunes. Not great mixes yet, but I'm working on it. And learning all about ProTools at the same time! Attention engineers: if you can't bounce because of some sort of "FF_audiosomethingorother.cpp", try changing the length of your selection. It'll work. Don't cry and assume your protools rig is busted.
Oh! We also got a new Myspace Page up. Please go sign up and be our friends. We need all the help we can get to impress these booking people!
And stay tuned for photos from the Mishap Prom! |

| | "Freakshow (On The Dancefloor)" by Elvis Costello | ] | Whoo-haa! Just got back from playing the Mishap Prom 2006. What a blast! Last year's was great too, but this one was a big step up, not only in terms of my own set but everyone else's as well - TopR, the Gomorroans, and a few new acts, notably Justus Bends (who ALMOST topped my set with "Stand Perfectly Still" - thankfully, I was able to come from behind and put on a good show), and Methlab Fire, fronted by Josh Howell-Davis, who is certifiably insane.
MethLab Fire was also my backing band for the show, and they're gonna probably be "Missing Teens West" because they did such a hot job. It was Dave Posner on drums and Jordan Cohen in guitar, with their pal Tim (don't know his last name) on bass... I've known these guys for years now but I've never played with them in a band, nor would it have occurred to me to do so, but I wish I had years earlier because they totally locked in with the tracks and made the whole thing slam pretty damn hard.
Almost makes me reconsider adding the drummer as the final component of the Missing Teens.
And furthermore, this prom was better because instead of getting in a fight with a drunk idiot, which is what I did last year, I got some tail instead! And isn't that what you're supposed to do at a Prom?
Anywhoo, this Saturday is Dependency Day and though it may not rock quite as hard as the Prom, it's still gonna rock the balls of the Sputnik Bar clean off. Today I begin the acquisition of booking info for NYC clubs. Gotta make this a busy summer. After taking the 4th of July off, it's time to get back to work on the Bosch material, and track the rest of those guitars and bass.
So stay tuned, happy campers! And don't miss our show this Saturday, at the Sputnik Bar in Brooklyn! Your Dependence Day will be all the richer for it! |

| | "Welcome To The Club" by Brian Wilson | ] | Mixing from about 6:30-7:30 in the morning is not really the brightest idea. It's really a good move to get up at 6 and give yourself an hour and a half, and even that is a ridiculously small amount of time to get any work done. But for the working stiff, that's about the only time you might get if your evenings are full of other garbage. Recently Jared Rock and I playing "Metroid Prime" (me for the third time) has taken time away from valuable productivity.
Nonetheless, work IS getting done. Drums are now on "Laundromat," "Wash Up" and "Waiting On The Internet". Crossfades need to be added to "Waiting," "Wash Up" needs everything mixed down about 2 dB and the vocal/guitar levels adjusted, and Laundromat needs that certain je ne sais quoi which I just can't provide yet, parse que je don't sais what it needs exactly. Still, the songs are sounding good enough for you to get down to. So go ahead and get down. Get down... tonight.
And in the meantime, get pumped for the MISHAP PROM this Saturday, July 1st, at the Rickshaw Stop in SF! I'll be playing with Dave Posner and Jordan Cohen, which ought to be a real meeting of the alcohol-ravaged minds.
Tonight we add more guitar by Jared Rock, and perhaps Roko Djokovic (last night's session was cancelled) |

| | "Two Princes" by Joan Baez | ] | Wooza. Today I is at work. Me am going process documents and scan scan scan.
I'm a bit tired today because two of my old friends, Jennie Beuhler and Mandy Huelse, who are both fine ladies, cruised into town last night. And no, I did not get any action from them in case that's what you're thinking, because of my use of the term "fine ladies". Nope, they're just both very pretty and the two of them and Jared Rock and I went down to the beer garden and shot the shit and then headed back to my place to see the cats and the little child. Bedtime came at 1:30 and I was brutally up 5 hours later.
Now, for most of you rock stars, that's not a big problem, but for me that's 3 sleep hours short of sanity. Typing speed is down from my usual 75 wpm to about 50. This is make me very sad. Brain not feel good. To caffiene or not to caffiene?
Tonight I head up to Roko Djokovic's place in the Bronx to cut some guitar. Jared and Spencer Chakedis will most likely be joining us. I've been mixing the drums like a little bitch, although I suppose I could've got more done if I had skipped the beer garden. These songs are starting to sound really good. My hat's off to Darren Jones for playing 12 of the 15 tunes hands-down solid. Some of these tracks I didn't even need to edit.
In particular, I urge you bitches to check out the tune "Round of Applause". This one wasn't sounding so great for a while, but Darren really added the rock - now it's one of the best sounding tracks.
I'm gonna be a busy fucking bee the next few days: on Thursday I pop off to California to play the MISHAP PROM! It ought to be a blast. Head over to http://www.crapcore.com to check it out. Then, on July 8th, I celebrate DEPENDENCE DAY at the Sputnik Bar in Brooklyn. That ought to be a blast, too. I love it when we can all come together to celebrate the spirit of dependence that makes this country so great.
Also in the works - Mike Weber, who did a fan-fucking-tastic job with the press release, is cooking up a new website for the Missing Teens. It looks, you know, like a website. But a real one. A professional one. It doens't have a hella irritating flash intro but I'm sure we'll get that at some point.
Ok - this little blog entry is getting long winded. Long story short: I'm exhausted, very busy working on crap, more guitar comes tonight, go check out the new mixes! |

| You got me working (working day and night) |
[Jun. 21st, 2006|11:10 am] |
What a productive little era for your favorite administrative assistant!
I forget when I last updated this livejournal... but recently, I've tracked drums, bass on a few tunes, and even more guitar. We've got Darren Jones filling out the rhythm section, and Dave Tirolo on bass, which is great, because not only does have a Fender Jazz that we can always get a great tone out of, but he also is a solid player and shares the same lite rock with a hip hop beat sensibilities that I do.
There are more tracks from Spencer. The tone is not excellent but the lines are top-notch. We're heading up to Roko Djokovic's place in the Bronx tomorrow night to track some more guitar. Getting Roko and Spencer together ought to be a little bit like getting Harpo and Chico together. Well, that's what I'm hoping.
Meanwhile, Fluffy "No Longer the Watch" Combs is in town with Lindsey Rock and little Harper, so I've been spending a little too much time drinking beer and playing Super Mario Sunshine, but on the other hand, I've got a new rhythm guitar track for "My Old Lifestyle" and there's probably a lot more coming where that came from.
The biggest problem now is finding the TIME to mix this shit all together. Recording isn't going to be as easy either, now that I'm out of school. The Rock family will be out of town tonight, so I might be able to mix the drums into a few more tunes. Slowly, but surely, this album is coming together.
And we've got our first NYC gig in a while coming up, July 8 at the Sputnik Bar in Brooklyn. That ought to be a blast. It's time to get back on top of this crazy game we call love. If you know what I mean. And if you don't know what I mean, I can't really blame you. You can check out the Sputnik Bar at www.barsputnik.com.
Also: bored at work? So am I. That's why I've been creating a little underground art. It's far from genius, but you nintendo fans and political hacks both will get a kick out of this. Updated daily. Don't tell the copyright office.

| | "Bubble Bobble Theme" by Korn | ] | Met with Matt Kelly of the Porn Horns yesterday and gave him a bounce of "Back To Reality" by the Bosch. Can't wait to hear the horns!
Also, got up early this morning and comped together the lead vocal for "Fernando and Louise" from the tracking session I did with Alex Beck the other day. Sounds pretty nice! I'll never get that song to sound exactly the way I want it; some of the words are always going to be slurred. But this is as good as it's gonna get for now. Fix the volume on the different regions, throw a little slap delay on there, and BAM, it's done.
Today Jared Rock and his wife Lindsey and child Harper show up. They're staying with me for about 2 weeks. Gotta get Jared a guitar so he can rock. Tomorrow I'm heading up to City College to track drums with Darren Jones. He's a trooper, so I'm gonna push him until he gets up and leaves. I've always wanted to do that. Like when Donald Fagen had Jeff Porcaro (or one of those guys) hit a snare drum for 6 hours until said drummer got up and left in a huff. I love that story. Seriously, though, we got like 15 songs to track, so Darren better be in for the long haul! I'm bringing him some vodka to boost his stamina.
On a side note, here's an interesting little anecdotal insight into the human condition. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi bit the dust yesterday, and here's the reaction from two members of the family of one his American victims, Nick Berg.
"In a CNN interview on Thursay, Mr. Berg's father, Michael, speaking from his home in Wilmington, Del., said he felt sorry for Mr. Zarqawi, who was a human being 'with a family who are reacting just as my family reacted when Nick was killed.' Mr. Berg, who described himself as a pacifist, added: 'His death will ignite yet another wave of revenge.'
"Mr. Bigley's brother, Stan, in a BBC interview, was less charitable. 'I'm glad he's off the face of the earth,' he said. 'Ken was just one of a multitude of innocent people killed by that man. He was a monster.'"
That wide a range in one family. Mankind will never be at peace, will it? |

| | "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Madonna | ] | Hoo boy! It really has been a long time since I typed a damn thing here. Of course, now that the old office job is back, that shouldn't be a problem, provided I remember what the heck is going on.
Well, a lot is under way: I decided to enlarge earlier plans to put together a demo for gigging into producing a full-length album that can be sold, or at least distributed. The working title is "Music For Young Adults" and the vocals are also entirely cut. Live drums are getting tracked on Saturday, and guitar and bass the week after that. I only have access to the studios at City College until the 20th of June, but I'm gonna try to fit a little wurlitzer recording in there too...
I'm meeting Matt Kelly of the Porn Horns today. Hopefully this cat has what it takes to rock. We'll see. They're adding horns to "Back to Reality" by the Bosch (whom I have the pleasure of recording & mixing a small release for - 5 songs total), and if they're worth a hill of beans, perhaps they'll be adding horns for me too.
"Rosea On The Flesh" just wrapped up. Sigh. No more naked chicks to look at. Oh well, at least I got to write a "sexy" tune. I think I'm about as sexy as Josef Stalin, but the ladies seemed to like it.
Currently I got Mike Weber working on a press release for us. He's actually getting it done on time. Imagine that!
So - uh - stay tuned, kids! There should be new rough mixes of the Music For Young Adults on the website in the next week, and the Bosch stuff will slowly be getting mixed. I ain't getting paid, so they ain't getting speedy delivery. But their performance was energetic and pretty tight, so the product is going to sound really nice.
Have a happy, um, mid-June! |
